January Complete any jobs left undone in December. Make garden plan. Take soil samples and send for testing, apply manure, lime, etc. Sow seeds for transplanting: tomato, cabbage, broccoli, lettuce and cauliflower. Plant shrubs and trees. Prune shrubs.

February Plant transplants, plant seeds for beets, carrots, lettuce, and onion sets. Plant second planting of English peas and Irish potatoes. Plant in hotbeds seeds for transplanting: peppers, eggplants and any greens not planted in January. Plant rhubarb, asparagus, strawberries, dewberries, blackberries, etc. Bed sweet potatoes for early crop. Prune and fertilize berries and grapes. Add 1 lb. fertilizer per 100 ft row. Fertilize roses heavily with manure and prune them. Start planting gladioli bulbs. Prune crepe myrtle.

March Plant any plant you failed to plant in February. Destroy weeds and grass as they appear. Replant when radishes and other early crops are harvested. Fertilize shrubs, trees, and lawns. Fertilize roses.

April Plant any tender plants now: peas, okra, squash, melons, beans, cucumbers, corn, etc. Set sweet potatoes. Watch for insect pests and disease. Thin greens to 3-4 inches apart. Feed and spray azaleas and camellias as soon as they are finished blooming.

May Set out transplants: eggplants, tomatoes and peppers – last chance! Watch out for Mexican beetles. Renew Strawberry bed as soon as crop is harvested. Stake and prune tomatoes. Sow celery seeds. Fertilize hydrangeas. Plant summer annuals

June Set tomatoes for late crop. Mulch now. Set sweet potatoes for late crop. Fertilize berries and prune old bramble canes. Plant beans corn and peas for fall crop. Fertilize azaleas and camellias. Cut back gardenias one third when they are finished blooming. Cut back poinsettias. Prune azaleas. Fertilize roses.

July Time to water and mulch. Fertilize and control garden pests. Select best plants to save seeds. Prune oleander immediately after flowering. Root cuttings of azaleas and camellias.

August Plant fall garden now with green beans, carrots, Irish potatoes, squash, turnips, rutabagas, etc. Feed chrysanthemums heavily.

September Plant any fall garden plants not planted in August. Fertilize and mulch. Plant cover crops. Sow onion seeds. Fertilize strawberry plants. Bulb planting time. Divide summer blooming perennials. Plant sweet peas. Fertilize roses.

October Plant lettuce and other greens. Dig and store sweet potatoes. Set strawberry plants. Seed planting time. Dig caladiums. Set out pansy plants.

November Plant kale and spinach for winter crop. Clean garden site and get ready for another season. Set strawberry plants (best month). Broadcast manure on grape and other small fruits. Prune scuppernongs as soon as leaves fall. Plant rye grass. Put out spring flowering bulbs. Mulch heavily any semi-hardy plants.

December Set asparagus plants. Prepare for planting in January. Plant English peas, lettuce, spinach and onion sets. Prune grape vines and set berry plants. Prepare planting holes for trees and shrubs.
